Disney favourites Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy introduce several of Disney’s heroes … and a few villains in the latest “On Ice” spectacular.
Over two 40-minute halves, six broad storylines are explored.
The first involves Ariel, Flounder and Sebastian, the crab from The Little Mermaid.
Next up are the adventurous Moana, her traditional sailing boat and the demigod Maui.

Before interval, we are introduced to Rapunzel and good-hearted thief Flynn from Tangled.
After the break, Gaston and the Beast spar for Belle’s affections in Beauty and the Beast.
With Kristoff and snowman Olaf in tow, Anna is searching for Elsa in Frozen.
And finally, from Encanto, the three sisters – Mirabel, Isabela and Luisa – come together.

Not surprisingly, each bracket involves several up-tempo songs and many more colourful characters that are woven into the storytelling.
I have been attending these Disney shows for many years and I never cease to be struck by how slick, bright, engaging and family friendly they are.
Far from skating on thin ice, the people behind it, Feld Entertainment, are on rock solid ground.
There is a warmth and wonder about what they do so, so well.

Let’s face it, they have some crackerjack stories to work with … and everyone I know grew up on Disney fancies.
I dare say the biggest challenge is what to include that is different one year from the next.
Then, it becomes a question of condensing story lines to easily understood and readily embraced snippets, which, again, they do with aplomb.
Being staged on ice allows a surfeit of tricks to be performed throughout: from elegant and dexterous skating, to pirouettes and leaps, and, this year, even aerials.

The costuming is magnificent, a rich tapestry of creativity, with surprises aplenty. I like to call it an intoxicating flight of fancy. Simply beautiful.
And then there are the evocative sets and props that undoubtedly elevate the offering.
The musical numbers, of which there are plenty, inevitably resonate. Think the likes of Under the Sea and the much-adored anthem Let It Go.
Throw in spectacular lighting, a few unexpected pyrotechnics and brilliant sound, and you have another triumphant Disney on Ice.

It all goes down a treat … and, in case you are interested, the biggest cheers are saved for the adorable Olaf … and Elsa, when she is found.
The magic dust is there in abundance in Disney on Ice: Find Your Hero, which is on at Rod Laver Arena until 20th July, 2025.
