Generations on, the mellifluous sound of the American folk-rock duo continues to intoxicate. Now, a wonderful cover band brings back the good times.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel captivated the world and became one of the best-selling musical acts of the 1960s.

They grew up in the same neighbourhood, but had a tempestuous relationship, leading to artistic disagreements.

Still, the strength of their musical legacy lives on for the inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A swag of Grammy Awards (nine competitive awards, four Hall of Fame Grammys and a Lifetime Achievement Award) attests to the esteem in which they are held.

Think the likes of The Sound of Silence, Mrs Robinson, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Homeward Bound, I Am a Rock, Scarborough Fair, Cecilia and America.

ree

All that and much more are the mainstays of a stunning two act set by a tribute band par excellence.

Known as Music Legends, they seemingly effortlessly recreate the sound and mastery of the some of the biggest names in music history.

Simon & Garfunkel are foremost in their impressive repertoire.

And what a 28-song concert they perform, one with emotional resonance that takes one back to the heady days of the Swinging Sixties.

They combine the mellow and reflective with the buoyant and upbeat.

Whilst it is mostly about the music, they also manage to engage the audience with a few well-chosen anecdotes.

I speak of a quintet, with a couple of special additions.

First up, there is the sensational, vocally dexterous James van Cuylenberg. Is there anything this man can’t do? During the show, he plays the piano, synthesizer, guitar and accordion.

Some of the most soulful tunes are fronted by lead guitarist Paul Davies, who is also responsible for backing vocals.

With noteworthy timbre in his voice, James’ father, Eric, is a powerful singer in his own right.

He, too, takes the lead on a few songs, including the incomparable Bridge Over Troubled Water. At other times, he provides backing vocals.

Jono Wright is in his element, potent and prolific with drumsticks in hand – a joy to watch in action.

As laid back as any is Dave Prideaux on bass, who also provides a salutary story about a cheap online purchase … that backfired. Nice.

Broken into two hour-long halves, towards the end of the show, James invites on stage two additional back up vocalists, who perform five numbers.

I speak of James’ mum, Wendy and close family friend Janet Vague. Standing alongside James’ dad, they harmonise beautifully.

ree

In fact, the harmonies throughout are transformative.

They elevate a very special concert, in which we are enveloped by the joyful vibes that Music Legends create.

Their other six shows include Elton John, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Cat Stevens, The Troubadours and Aussie Music Legends.
